Woke up and the first thing i did was go outside and check the condition as it snowed last night and we could be stuck there for some time if it snowed heavy but everything looked ok.Everyone was up by 7:30 .Had tea and asked everyone to get ready while me and sumit went to the monastery parking to fix the broken clutch cable. We had the tools and the spare.Sumit’s bull is old model and as such its clutch mechanism was different than what it is now.You have to open the box and then change the wire and we couldnt even open the box as the screws were jammed and we had small screw driver. We needed a longer one which is used for pickups and trucks .Went around tabo asking for it but couldnt find it and while passing through the street saw a few bikes parked there and one person smiling holding a camera along side a blue pulsar.Took me a second to figure out he was none other than Deepak Gupta .We have never met but interacted a few times on facebook and whatsapp and i knew he and his gang was also coming to spiti but their plan was to start a day after us.Shared our exp and listened to his.It was a good half an hour spent with an experienced traveler who had inspired me to do spiti both in summers and winters. He was leaving for kaza that day and he was very lucky as it had snowed a lot that night in kaza and he will be seeing more white spiti than us.
And now again we were back to our worries. What to do with the broken clutch wire.We couldnt find the screwdriver.Someone told us that there is mechanic shop at lari some 4 kms from tabo and there is a chance he can help.Went to lari only to find the mechanic shop closed.Vishnu again was struggling with his bike and when we stopped at the mechanic shop he asked to check the bike.Rode it for a few metres and i knew what was wrong as the same i experienced a few days before this trip.It was the handlebar that was creating the problem and to fix it we needed to change the small balls.Sorry dnt know what we call it exactly.
Good thing we knew the problem , Bad thing we could only fix it at rampur which was still 250kms from there. There are a few houses in lari so we tried our luck and asked the locals if they had the big screwdriver but without any success.Saw mobile number of the mechanic written on door of his shop but none of us had BSNL.Anik managed to get phone from a local and we tried calling the mechanic but again the luck wasnt on our side.He didnt pick it.But there is this great thing about the people living in tribal circuit. They are always helpful and that too without any greed. At gue too we were struggling to cross the streets due to snow blocking it and an old lady who could barely walk went to her house and returned with an axe and a spade in her hands so that we can make way for our bikes and at sumdo , tabo and now lari locals we were able to connect with our families only because of locals who gave us their phones as all STDs are closed at this time.
So with no luck at lari we were now facing a bit of condition here.Sumit had a broken clutch cable , yudi’s bike was already parked at sumdo as it couldnt start and now vishnu had a major problem with the handlebar but we had no choice. So again sumit and deepinder paaji started towards sumdo as we know it was the only place where we could get the tools as the GREF and ITBP camps are there. We reached sumdo and parked our bikes just before GREF checkpost and sumit , deepi paaji and yudi went towards the camp.Yudi went to the RH to check his bike which was parked there like we left it 2 days back.after a few kicks it roared like it was supposed tne problem fixed. When we reached sumdo we saw one of the ITBP guys we met at gue 2 days back and told him about our problem. He immediately arranged for tools from the GREF mechanics and thats what we needed. The box was finally opened and after around 2 hours of struggle Sumit’s bull was ready to roll again. So 2 out of 3 problems were solved. One one left and that we all knew we couldnt do anything till we reach rampur. The weather was again starting to change and it was already past 2.Now my main worry was to cross malling nallah before the weather gets nasty. We crossed sumdo landslide stretch and after that it was all good roads.Just a few kms from malling it started snowing there. The targeted halt for today(Ist march) was atleast pooh or powari/peo as we had to be back in chandigarh by 2nd march.it snowed all the way from malling to khab and we were riding in snowstorm that time as seen in the video below :
Somehow managed to reach khab without any problem. From khab onwards there was no snow but it was raining lightly but we had no choice but to continue riding. We kept on riding and it kept on raining.Somewhere lightly then a bit heavy and then lightly. It was dark and we were still in the landslide zones between pooh and spello.Again the fog lights came into use.Now the roads were getting a bit tougher to ride on due to slush and gravel but somehow we reached powari.Fueled up and asked sumit if we should stop there as it was dark and raining and tapri was still around 20 kms from there. We discussed for a moment and all decided that ab baarish main chal hi rahe hai toh chal lo.And again we started towards tapri.around 7 -8 kms till karcham were bad but after that it was all good roads and we managed to reach tapri safe and sound and before the markets were closed.went straight to the dhaba and while everyone was ordering i went to the PWD RH and booked 3 rooms for us to stay for the night.Rain had already stopped. We were all wet and tired as we had covered TABO to TAPRI in a day while riding through snowstorm and rains and that meant the bottles we had with us on the entire trip were to be emptied tonight.
Went to the rooms , took a bath , changed the clothes and assembled at the dining hall. After 5 days we were having drinks and it was a needed one as we had completed the white spiti dream and crossed the most difficult part of this ride.Tomorrow we will be back to chandigarh and everyone will get busy with their lives. We got drunk , had fun and thanked everyone for joining in and making this ride possible.
DAY 6 : We started from tapri at 9 AM and didnt stop much at this day as we had to cover around 300kms distance that day.So very less stops and very less photographs.Reached panchkula at around 8PM and were greeted by Bhanu’s family and Ashish singla bhai. Congratulated each other and headed towards home to meet my boy Zeus after 6 days.
