Again the same story.planned to wake up early and visit kaza, key monastery and kibber and come back to tabo , pack bags and leave for nako and everyone was up by 6:30 but again the numbers game. The time everyone was ready it was 9AM alreadyStarted our journey towards kaza. This stretch was the one where we expected to see a lot of snow and just a few kms from tabo we were greeted by an all white spiti valley.Near sichling we saw pin and spiti rivers covered with snow.It was just snow and snow and snow and snow everywhere. We halted there , danced , had fun and spent around an hour there admiring the beauty of the white spiti.what we saw along with snow on ground was the dark clouds above which meant some unexpected trouble. So were again back on road to kaza.Reached kaza and started taking pics near the point from where one road leads to market and other bypasses it and leads to petrol pump.I ,vishnu , sumit and yudi were ahead while deepin paaji, anik and bhanu were busy clicking pics.we went to the petrol pump for refill.we waited there but no signs of other three riders.i though they must have taken a wrong turn leading to the school.went back to find nothing.i though maybe they went to the market so we went there too but still no sign of them.We were told that only one dhaba is open there and the name was manu nepali dhaba and it was the only one opened as most of the streets were covered with snow.I have visted kaza in summers and that time the streets are crowded to an extent you have to struggle to cross them on bike and if you are in cars you have to keep your patience.only a couple of shops were open so we went to do a bit of shopping.Flags , keychains , bandanas etc etc.Still no sign of othere. We thought lets go to the dhaba and wait for them there as eventually if they have to eat and they ask someone they will be redirected here only.We went there and ordered food.An hour gone still no sign of riders. While coming back to the place where we parked our bikes we interacted with a few locals who were surprised to see bikers coming to kaza in such conditions and even along the way from nako to kaza whoever we met asked the same question : “bhaiji thoda jaldi ni aagye iss baar.season to june ke baad shuru hota hai ”
then came a man who asked if there were more riders with us and one of them being a sardarji and told us that they were on their way to key and asked us to inform you incase we see you.So we started towards key and just after crossing the Rangrik-key diversion the first “oh iski bhains ki ” moment happened.Infront of us was a 100 metres of ice covered road and that too a bit inclined.I was infront and i knew a bit on how to not fall on it thanks to the shimla-chakrata trip where i had the first fall of my riding life.So i started slowly with both my legs being used as sledge and to be honest this time it was fun.and then i saw vishnu and yudi felling flat on ground. This is what ice can do to you.they were shocked as they were going good.Somehow they got up and started again and slowly we all crossed that stretch.Road ahead was too full of snow but there was enough room for bikes to pass easily as the the snow was only in the middle and on the sides of the road due to regular vehicle moment.Just before key village we saw the other riders coming back.the first miscommunication of the trip happened here and both were at fault. They remained behind and we didnt wait for them at the turn leading to petrol pump. They crossed us and none saw the other.we told them that we will meet them near the kaza circuit house and they can explore the market till then.
Went to key monastery and the view from the monastery was something words cant describe.Everywhere you see , you will find snow.the peaks, the roads , the rivers everything was covered under the blanket of snow.Went inside monastery and were offered the namkin chai by the monks there. And just after we exited the monastery , snowfall started.Good news we were witnessing live snowfall , bad news were expecting more live snowfall.Being the only one who had been to spiti before and knows the sudden change of climate in spiti i was a bit worried.A little or moderate snowfall is always fun to see but what if there is heavy snowfall.you can be stuck up at kaza for days or even weeks and thats the last thing i wanted to happen to us.I talked to sumit about it and he agreed that we should be leaving kaza before things get a bit ugly.Started back towards kaza and again the same stretch of 100 mts and again vishnu ji fell.I dnt know what it was but the tyres of his DS were giving him a hard time.he was just in front of me and i see no mistake on his part.I already told him the “no race no break” rule to cross black ice and he was following it but still the tyres were not helping him.anyhow managed to cross this one again with just one fall.met others at petrol pump and started back towards tabo.
Funny incident : till now while riding to ease the tension and keep the trip in good vibes , me and sumit used to move our hands or you can say dance while riding the bike.Sumit was leading i was behind him and others were behind me and suddenly sumit did the hand movement again and i followed.i was doing the hand movements and others behind me saw it and they started doing it too.so everyone of us while riding our bikes was moving his hands like we were dancing.Sumit stopped at ledang and said abe kya kar rahe ho.I said dance as we always did during this trip.he said : saalon main signal de raha tha ki meri clutch cable break ho gayi hai.mirror main peeche dekha tum sabhi dance kar rahe ho
So all the fun was converted to a bit of worry.I asked him if he wanted to change the wire now as i was carrying the spares with me in a bag.Just a few kms from tabo there were a few landslides that created some humps of gravel at a few places on the road.Sumit said he wants to cross those in any case before dark so he will ride the bike without the wire and we can change it later when we reach tabo.Sumit is one hell of a rider and i have had no doubts on his riding skills. He said he will speed up and reach tabo and asked me to lead others to tabo but sending him alone wasnt an option so i asked deepinder paaji to accompany him and they went like a bullet.now it was me , anik with bahnu as pillon and vishnu with yudi as pillon.I was leading when i saw that vishnu and yudi were very slow and far behind us.made me a bit angry as it was snowing and we had to reach tabo on time.stopped for them only to find that they had a hard fall and we were only saved by the snow on sides of road as they fell on the snow and not in middle of road.and they were helped by the people in sumo which was behind them.and vishnu was feeling uneasy riding the bike.so i decided that vishnu will ride alone with the bag i had and i will have the pillon with me.Vishnu was still slow due to being uncomfortable with his bike which i though was a aftershock of the fall he took but still we had to be together and thus i asked him to lead and i will tail.Somehow we managed to reach tabo before dark.parked our bikes at the monastery and again to Mr Rajinder’s house. Were served hot tea and were sitting in the warm room. There was no snowfall at tabo when we reached there and most of our shoes and gears were outside.and suddenly someone went outside to find our shoes half filled with snow.Yes , thats spiti for you .Snowed when we least expected it to but snow in the shoes was not an issue , if its snows all night then we were to have an issue tomorrow. But what could we do so had dinner and went to sleep.
